#4786 – realistic expectations

yesterday after work i went to the ottobar in baltimore for the first time to see berzerker for maybe the last time — she has to go back to australia since her student visa is up, so the venue was having a benefit farewell show for her and theron, her boyfriend. $10 cover + $1 raffle tickets… i had only $1 on me after paying for the cover charge so i bought myself one raffle ticket, saying “well, it only takes one to win!”

when i arrived it was just after it started and there were only a handful of other derby folks there, but soon all sorts of people were streaming through the door. while we were waiting for more folks to arrive i talked with ali kaida and pistol whip how i’m going to be skating with harm city homicide and they were both excited to hear that.

dirty marty was emcee for the evening, and even though it’s “all ages”, because it wasn’t exactly a family-oriented event he was thrilled: “i can cuss now! i can say things like ‘fuck’ and ‘bullshit’! like… it’s fucking bullshit that berzerker has to leave!”

one of the bands (chowder, i believe) was pretty good — they played some instrumental metal that i enjoyed, and later (after the band “blonde hair blue eyes” played) they came back and did some more music with lyrics. it was pretty hilarious, the singer was this tall, muscular black man — at one point there was some kid who’s probably about 12- or 13-years-old who was having a birthday and they got him up on stage…

singer: “ALRIGHT. LET’S SAY ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ FOR THIS MUTHAFUCKER.”

crowd: “happy birthday.”

singer: “THAT WAS FUCKING LAME, DO IT AGAIN!! LET’S SAY ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ FOR THIS MOTHERFUCKER!!”

otto erotic and i were rolling around in hysterics because that was absolutely hilarious to see.

i was talking with jazzometer, cynicalscribe and asavas about haikus (since johnny zebra liked my ragu haiku from the other day), so i went back through some old posts and entries on 5seven5 to find some of my favorite haikus i’ve made:

#4784 – it's better to have loved and lost than to listen to an album by olivia newton-john

…because anything’s better than to listen to an album by olivia newton-john.

work today was ok — same ol’ same ol’, still having to help out a lot on the phone queue. today was good though because my group had beat out the other group in the internet response team (we scored better in our quizzes and productivity and stuff like that) so we got a pizza party as reward. my lunch is normally from 1:30 – 2 pm, and i was scheduled for the pizza party from 12:30 – 1:30, so from 12:30 to 2 pm i got to sit and eat pizza and drink coke and do nothing. by the time i was scheduled for my pizza at 12:30, pretty much the rest of my group had already had their pizza so it was just me, a supervisor on guard, and 8 or 9 pizzas in one room. i almost thought i’d have to pull a hannahchan and do an “i ated too much” post, but lucky for me my ol’ coworker idalia (who is now in a different department at work) called me to see if i wanted to chat while she was at lunch so i went to the cafeteria to chat with her during the rest of my offline time.

open skate tonight wasn’t bad, it was less crowded than last week, and at least this time they didn’t get on the intercom to call out the roller derby folks. (well, yosemite slam claims they called him out, but i swear i heard them yelling at two girls instead. in any case, if they did call him out then that was uncalled for because the kid he hit had swerved directly in front of him as if the kid was trying to trip him up intentionally.)

i also made bad puns, stuff like…

me: “so, did you get your kneepads yet?”

cynicalscribe: “no… sin city skates said they’re going to try to get them to me by the tryouts, though.”

me: “ohh… well, hopefully they’ll arrive… kneepads are something that you… ‘kneed’.”

cynicalscribe: *groan!*

cynicalscribe: “so, my mom says that for a derby name i should be ‘hermione deranger’, but that’s probably taken.”

me: “yeah… but if it is already taken then you can be ‘j.k. scowling’!”

cynicalscribe: “i do scowl, this is true!”

she says i need to buy a certain shirt, and i actually really like the reason why, bahahaha!

even though there weren’t as many kids at skateland tonight, they were absolutely crazy — “when did it become ‘lord of the flies’ in here?!?” i ended up wondering at one point. kids were throwing skates around (and getting yelled at for that, bahah), stealing each other’s skates, pushing, shoving, and being all crazy kids. at one point during the guys-only skate i found a bearing housing on the rink and i scooped it up so nobody would trip on it. it actually makes a perfect ring!

i’m so hardcore instead of a set of brass knuckles, i have only one brass knuckle.

elvengrrl posted a link to the final scene from “xanadu”. i hadn’t seen the movie and didn’t know anything about it, but when i started to watch this clip my reactions were:

  • ok, it’s a musical…
  • OMGWTFROLLERSKATES.

i think the night terrors should use the theme to xanadu as their intro for the next bout. i’m sure it’ll really give some folks some nightmares… *shudder*

    #4782 – cameras and sports

hahaha, andy samberg and the lonely island guys are at the o’s game in seattle.

august 1 i’m going to a seminar hosted by simon bruty (homepage) sponsored by apple and canon. that should be interesting and i hope to pick up some tips like when i saw vincent laforet a year or so ago… his seminar gave me some good ideas for processing and editing photos that i now use when photographing things like, oh, roller derby. (hah! all but one of the photos are mine! then again, not only am i buddy-buddy with the folks who wrote and edited that, but epmd has been sick the past few days and only has two or three photos uploaded so far.)

man, that 1D mark iii sure looks nice… too bad it’s $4500! 😛 i don’t know which i’d prefer, though… the 5D with the full 35mm frame? or the 1D with 10 fps and improved autofocus? i think i know which one my wallet prefers… (answer: none of them).

i still need to write up something about me for my fitzpatrick photos site. the problem is that i don’t know what i want to say without sounding all horn-tootingy (even if i’m SUPPOSED to be horn-tootingy when talking about myself on my own website). in any case, i have to do that by the end of this weekend so i can email the link to my site with photos to the today show’s producer.

and speaking of roller derby photos, who all is going to the regionals in columbus, ohio next month? i’ve got off of work on thursday the 16th to drive over there, and then i’ll be there from friday through sunday, and then return on monday the 20th. it’ll be awesome! road trip! that’ll be fun to photograph… i predict i might need to get more memory cards as well as some external storage, heh (terabytes are required when i’ve got this many photos to keep track of). and if you want to ride along with me in my mini, i’ve got travel bingo! hooray!

and speaking of games to play while on road trips, bruno_boy and i invented a game called “hot chick or not chick”, also known as “the good, the bald and the ugly” — you try to predict based on the type of car you’re about to pass whether or not it’s going to be a dude, a “hot chick”, or an old lady (a “broom hilda”). dudes are worth 0 points, hot chicks are worth lots of points based on hottness, and “broom hildas” are like bankrupt in wheel of fortune… you lose all of your points!

i still also need to start figuring out details for heading up to cooperstown at the end of next week before it’s suddenly here. hrm.

    ok, time for bed…
