#4891 – i map you map we all map for imap

you know, i didn’t think i’d really care about gmail ever introducing imap (folks online were all “GIMME IMAP ZOMG MUST HAVE”), and i guess i was soured on the idea of imap by the implementation we had at umbc — what good is storing your email on the school/company/whoever’s server when you’ve got some dumb limit of 50 megs for email or whatever? you’re going to have to clear it out sometime!

well, google introduced imap for gmail today, and holy crap is it nice! i can’t believe i’m getting this excited about email… well, as excited as i can about RFC 3501, at least. since i spend all day at work checking my personal email via gmail on my phone’s WAP browser and then when i get home i have to sort through all the emails i already read and delete the spam messages i already deleted on my phone so they don’t sully up my computer’s inbox, well, now i can mark them as read or whatever and i won’t have to duplicate work! how good is that!

#4889 – chainsmoke on the water

do you ever listen to “smoke on the water” by deep purple and wonder what frank zappa and his band were playing when the montreaux casino burnt down? i do… or rather, i did until i got my paws on this:

that’s right, someone bootlegged that concert and frank issued it as part of a collection in order to make some money off of the folks that were selling (tsk tsk!) bootleg recordings of his concerts. unfortunately the “beat the boots” sets are rare and out of print. but i’ve (*ahem*) found a copy, and now i know what that historic performance was like (and knowing is half the battle).

#4888 – louie excursion module

i’m getting into reading up about some stuff about manned space missions online (it’s fascinating stuff), but then i read this on wikipedia:

A speech titled “In Event of Moon Disaster” was prepared by William Safire for President Nixon to read on television in the event that the Apollo 11 astronauts were stranded on the Moon. Following this address, radio communications with the moon would have been cut off, the astronauts left alone to die, while a clergyman was to commend their souls to “the deepest of the deep” in the fashion of a burial at sea.

that’s pretty creepy. o_o it doesn’t stop “moon disaster” from being an awesome band name, though.

and speaking of bands, guess who kinda-sorta almost learned to play the beginning to “louie louie” on the guitar tonight? yeah, i rock. though cynicalscribe said it wasn’t quite “louie louie”, i replied that maybe it was more of a “louis louis”, and she tore that down by describing it more of a “some guy some guy” — that’s how vaguely-“louie louie”-sounding it was.

i took photos for the august part of the ccrg 2008 calendar today. you’ll have to wait to see what it looks like, but it was pretty funny.

and in semi-random seriousness, does anybody have a fog machine? i bet if anybody does, greyplanet does.

#4887 – it's comcastic

me: *after doing the “tortoises having sex” sound and then thinking about the frogs/toads hopping around outside the apartment in the rain* “i wonder about frogs and toads having sex… do they make any weird noises? i bet if they had to wear condoms they’re ‘ribbited’ for her pleasure.”

zenmetsu: *talking about how gay customers at tower records would ask if he was gay “‘are you gay?’ ‘NO, I LISTEN TO METAL!!'”

bruno_boy: “is metal gay?”

me: “now freddie mercury, that’s ‘gay metal’!”

bruno_boy: *dips his potato waffles from chic-fil-a in his cookies ‘n cream milkshake*

kat: “gross!”

bruno_boy: *pretends to dip his chicken sandwich in his milkshake*

kat: “eww!”

bruno_boy: “what other weird foods can be dipped in there…?”

me: “i’ve got a pickle from my chicken sandwich!”

bruno_boy: “NO, you are not putting your pickle in my milkshake.”

me: “aw, c’mon dave… but i really like getting my pickle shaked!”

thanks comcast for apparently blocking some bittorrent traffic! if the AP didn’t do an article about it, i wouldn’t have remembered i was interested in finding some taped concerts. not only do i now have a shiny bittorrent client that i found, i also found some tunes. see what you made me do?!

meowremix3804: while poking around i found out i still have your login info you gave me to use for oink since mine either kept not working and/or has since expired, so i’ve logged in with your info to poke around – hope you don’t mind! 🙂
