#4976 – medium format kodachrome

recently i found out about shorpy, a photoblog that posts a bunch of old photographs from 50 – 150 years ago. recently it’s been posting some medium-format pictures from the 1940s, and several of them have been shot on kodachrome. like this one.

i’ve been thinking sometime of getting a medium-format camera, like the yashica mat-124, and looking at the full size of some of the photos on shorpy’s (example) and seeing the detail available with medium format and kodachrome slide film made me curious about shooting with that combination.

unfortunately, there’s only one place left in the US that develops kodachrome now, and they stopped developing medium-format kodachrome film years ago. it’s a shame.

ok, my batteries for my camera are done charging and i’ve got everything packed up to go, time for dinner and an early bedtime tonight — i didn’t fall asleep until after 3 am, and woke up around 7:30 and kept falling asleep and waking back up every few minutes even though i didn’t have to be up until 8:20. had a weird dream about photography, though… dreamt that fellow derby photographer EPMD and i each won a $1.00 photography training session. really bizarre.

#4975 – decent day

today wasn’t too bad:

  • we found out at work that our bonus multiplier is going to be 170% of our bonus targets — not as good as last year’s (193%), but not bad either! now i know what sort of budget i have for planning the new computer i want to get with it.
  • i got a nice reply back from a customer who was thankful for me finding good ways to save their school district some money
  • i got two cupcakes for free at work
  • had my first day of class today, and the professor is just like what the ratemyprofessor.com site said he’d be like — nice guy, gets off on a few tangents but ties them into his lecture, and seems to be pretty easygoing.
  • someone asked me in class tonight how much longer i have for school and i surprised even myself when i said “after this semester? only 3 classes!”

i wish i had more time, though… there’s a lot of stuff that’s happened recently that i want to write about, but either i’ve been not in a writing mood or i haven’t had time to write. there’s a lot of recent things i’ve been finding online that i’ve wanted to read, too, but again i don’t really have the time to sit down and read through them and so they all just end up piling up for me to tackle later.

tomorrow i need to wear my suit to work… i’m going to get to meet the CEO of verizon wireless when he gives a presentation about our 4th quarter results, and since it’s going to be webcast across the company nationwide i might as well look nice for it.

    Tasty and Quick Eats

Today I went to the grocery store after roaming about in D.C. with some other photographers as part of the DCist Flickr Photographer meetup. It was just going to be a quick trip, just to pick up some things that I knew I was out of or that I knew that I needed, like fabric softener sheets (I had to do laundry and I was out). I happened to also pick up two cans of Dinty Moore beef stew, three cans of Chef Boyardee mini-ravioli, milk and two each of these:

Yes, frozen burritos. These things are fantastic! They’re cheap, and they taste pretty good too!

Now normally I just go to the self-checkout lanes at the grocery store, but this particular one didn’t have those, so I had to go to a usual checkout lane. The lady working as cashier saw my items and said, “Now this is bachelor living, am I right?” and I had to admit that she was right. The best part was when she started to ring up the burritos and I acted totally serious and remarked:

These things are the best ever. They’re only 2 for $1 — I can take care of my meals for a WHOLE WEEK for just $14!!

I think the look on her face was actual shock and horror. Don’t worry, I still get my veggies and the rest of my balanced diet. But you don’t have to take my word for how good these things are — peep these entries for February 11 and 12, 2002! See? Tasty!

Although, I have to admit that even though these are supposedly microwaveable, once you heat them up in the oven it’s such a tremendous difference that you can’t go back to heating them up in the microwave anymore. The problem with oven-cooking for these is it takes a whole hour to cook! But that makes it the easiest meal preparation ever:

    1. Take burrito out of packaging and wrap burrito up in tin foil.

    3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and then put burrito in oven.

    5. Take the timer and turn until it stops (that’s 60 minutes, you don’t even have to look at the timer for this part!)

    6. Wait for the timer to ding.

    See? Easy!
