#5130 – virgin festival and the aftereffects

This was posted over 17 years ago; my opinions, thoughts, attitude, and writing style may have evolved since then, and this post might have been different if it were to be posted today.

so, virgin fest yesterday:

woke up and headed up to baltimore about 8:00 to meet at the designated parking lot for riding in at 9:15. stopped at an ATM along the way and picked up $50 for cash, and ended up getting to the parking lot about 30-40 minutes early so i wandered across the street to dunkin’ donuts for two donuts and a coffee for breakfast, and wandered back to the parking lot to wait for derby folks to show up.

after derby folks started to show up and hang out in the parking lot, mibbs breaking ribs was talking with chunk_vs_squeet, and i just kept hearing mibbs say “shut your mouth!” — my response was “she must have been talking about shaft!” later in the day i got an email from my exotica mailing list and i saw the subject line “[obit] Isaac Hayes”, and when i exclaimed “isaac hayes is dead?!” steak knife thought i knew because i was receiving “soul brother email alerts”, bahahaha…. 🙁 oh well. guess he’s with xenu now. 😛 *eyeroll*

carpooled to the concert in penaltyna’s car and then it was a hike into the infield and then up into the grandstand to the lounge that the derby folks would use. i was scheduled to work the ccrg booth from 6 to 7, and i didn’t really have any particular plans otherwise, so for a while i wandered about with sin diesel and we searched around for chalk to remake the track for the afternoon’s bouts. hung out at the track to keep an eye on it, did some roughing up of some staff to get some garbage bags that were piled up right next to the track and were stinking up the area and starting to leak onto the track moved away, and chatted with steak knife about how the track was like the surface of the moon and how bad the band playing on the south stage at the time was.

i planned to watch the derby exhibitions, but since there were only a handful of bands i was interested in seeing at all, and since the first bout was scheduled during the time that one of the bands i wanted to see, i skipped the bout to see andrew bird:

afterwards was more hanging about and wandering around. even though i got money from the ATM in the morning, i figured once i got my free meal ticket that i’d try to get through the day surviving on freebies:

– free bloody mary from the vip lounge in the grandstand

– free bottle of water from the vip lounge in the grandstand

– free bags of pretzels tossed out from one of the tents

– free cans of carbonated juice from a tent right by the ccrg tent

– meal voucher for chicken tenders and fries and a bottle of water

– free booze via a drink ticket at the artist/guest lounge

after getting the chicken tenders and fries for lunch, textureslut got a chance to go up in one of sex ed’s flying machines:

(some dude at the end of that video started saying to me “hey! killer! #47!” (gah, it’s 4.7!) and asked what it would take for him to get up on the aerial sculpture, and when i told him that there wasn’t any chance he asked “but what if i sign a waiver??”, lol)

before my shift at the ccrg booth, i went to go see iggy and the stooges:

i was about 3 people back in the center, and iggy came down in front of the stage and was singing along right in front of us (as you can see in the video, haha). at another part he was saying “come up here! come up!” and folks were crowdsurfing up, and shortly this guy comes running along the stage from the left, looking at the crowd and pumping his arms in the air like “yeah! look at me! i’m up on stage!!”… some sour-looking guy (probably the stage manager) tried to run after him after this guy passed him but couldn’t catch him, and the guy ran past iggy where another stagehand bumrushed the guy and BAM! gave him a shove and the guy went flying off the stage just like abbie hoffman at woodstock.

whammywah emailed me later with a link to this picture saying how trent reznor was watching iggy pop only about 20 feet away from me, hahahaha.

worked my shift at the ccrg booth with rolling blackout while the second exhibition bout of the day was going on. the folks who were there for the shift before mine wished i had arrived a little earlier since apparently they just saw the sloppiest most drunken shenanigans at a picnic table across from the booth… apparently there was a drunken handjob/blowjob involved, so they were all annoyed that i was late and that i had a camera as well, while they had nothing, hahahaha…

there was some drama going on at another booth where some family had some artistic masks made up, and while this teenage girl in the family was wearing one of these giant paper-mache-looking masks some drunken asshole punched it. that was all before i got there. cops showed up after i arrived at the ccrg booth, and wouldn’t you know that one of the cops was ethan, one of my fraternity brothers. so, that makes at least johnhr11, ethan, dave (working the merchandise stand) and myself there from the local chapter.

rolling blackout told myself and ethyl hurtz about the artist/guest lounge next to the north stage where you could get free booze, so we three went over there and got our free tequila drink tickets. they ran out of stuff for margaritas and so we ended up with shots of this drink that tasted like an alcoholic espresso.

a bunch of derby folks arrived at the stage shortly afterwards, and we got some random dude to take a group photo. we heckled him a little during the process (the best was dirty marty with “balance that camera on that barrel chest of yours! seriously! donkey kong is going to THROW you!”), and then he ran off with felonious punk and dirty jersey… they returned later and said that he made it seem as if they were all going to do shots together, and then he bought one for himself and said “ok, i’ll wait here while you get yours” so they ditched him for being a dick.

stayed at the artist/guest lounge for the nine inch nails set, since it was away from the crowd, and raised so you could see over the crowd well, and it was generally a good place to stay:

good set… recognized only a few songs, but i’m not a big of a nine inch nails fan (though i do enjoy their music… i just don’t know many of their songs). the stage show was fantastic, though.

afterwards we all went up to the lounge to regroup before fighting our way through the crowds leaving so we could get back to the cars. we couldn’t find ginga ninja, and there was rumor that she was hooking up with some roadie from stone temple pilots, but nobody knew anything definite and we couldn’t find her and she wasn’t answering her phone, so who knows where she was. i think i heard that sin diesel was going to send his buddies who were working security at the place to find her.

i didn’t get to sleep until after 3 am, and had to wake up around 8 for work. i woke up but was still too exhausted and sore from being out in the sun all day yesterday, on my feet, lugging boxes around and such, so i called out of work today. i could have gone, but after sleeping in for a few more hours i still felt sore and gross but at least i was awake. if i go next year (or any other year), i’ll need to consider scheduling the day afterwards off of work.

so, virgin fest was fun, but i wouldn’t say it was $100+ ticket fun. i’m glad this year’s ticket was free courtesy of ccrg. if i do go in the future, it’d have to be a pretty good lineup for me to shell out $100+ for a ticket to see 3 bands and look at girls in skimpy outfits wander around all day.

i wished i saw more of she & him… i saw a little of the band while wandering around to get food for lunch, and i just saw a bit while passing the stage. it looked a little neat and the girl singing looked cute. it wasn’t until later when i saw a twitter from mya bloody valentine that mentioned zooey and the band she & him, and a quick google search on my phone informed me that the singer was none other than zooey deschanel. i’m still kicking myself over missing that. 🙁 i bought their album online last night and gave it a listen today, and it’s pretty good, which makes it even worse. 😛

this afternoon i had class, so i drove on up for that… turned out we just had a quiz (which i had forgotten about and had to guess my way through 10 true/false and 2 quick answers that i kind of knew and kind of had to b.s. my way through. the instructor had already given us our final exam to complete and turn in on wednesday, so he just gave us our last powerpoint slides and dismissed us.

just talking with whammywah about runkeeper, and was talking with mom earlier about my bike… i may get this app for my phone as motivation to make me get out and run or bike more. and speaking of looking at girls in skimpy outfits wandering around all day, when i was on my way back from class, what was up with all the girls out jogging late this afternoon?? unfortunately, i don’t have a “hey horn” to say nice booty shalom:

maybe i should make a program for the iphone that does that, and put it in the app store. 😛 hahaha…
