#5062 – HURRY IT UP, TECHNICAL WRITING!!!

ethics in the information age? A

project management? A

still no grade listed yet for my technical writing class, though. 🙁 but my current GPA? 3.130! 😀 😀 😀

i re-ran that GPA calculator and told it that i’ve got a current GPA of 3.130, i’ve completed 108 credits (it says not to include your current courses, and so the technical writing course plus the other three classes i’m scheduled to take equal 12 credits left to go — still no word on whether or not i may need up to 123 credits, my advisor hasn’t heard anything back from the audit board, which is super-lame), and did some poking around with the calculator. now it seems that i could get a C in each of these four classes and still get away with a 3.017 cumulative GPA. woah!

all As: 3.2169

1 B: 3.1919

2 Bs: 3.167

3 Bs: 3.142

4 Bs: 3.1169

new semester starts on the 27th, right after labor day. they’re all online classes so i’ll have to be extra-diligent this last (hopefully!) semester. and guess what? only 95 days left between now and august 17! 🙂

#5061 – web standards

so i’ve been appointed new webmaster for the charm city roller girls, taking over from jazzometer. my first order of business in my new office is to fix up the website into wordpress so not only will it be in a content management system and easier to update/access (for both me and for fans), but it’s also giving the site a makeover — i’m still keeping the same basic layout at this point, but i’m rewriting it using css to display the pages: less images structuring the page = faster load times.

the problem so far is that it looks fantastic in safari and webkit-based browsers (was even able to do the drop shadows in css), it looks acceptable in firefox (a very slight graphics glitch at the bottom of a few pages, i’ll have to tackle that later but it’s not really noticeable unless you’re looking exactly for it. there’s also no css-based shadow effects since that hasn’t been adopted by the mozilla group, so the page itself looks “flat”, but otherwise nice), and when i checked it on cynicalscribe‘s computer in internet explorer it looks nowhere near as nice as it does in the other two since microsoft doesn’t really support css well at all.

so if i was just coding for only certain browsers:

safari: i’d be able to start adding content right away.

firefox: it’d need a little more layout-tweaking, but it’s good to go.

internet explorer: well, crap.

seriously, why can’t internet explorer do the webdesign world a favor and jump off a bridge?

once this is done, then i need to see about possibly transitioning the site over to a proper server with php / mysql abilities so i can get this running right. at the moment i’ve created a subdomain on my regular site to get the layout and the pages looking/running properly.

screenshots to come later once i’ve done more hacking around.

eta: since feisty_fitz complained that there’s no link to it, here’s a link so you can check it out while it’s still under development: http://ccrgwp.glennfitzpatrick.com. remember, it’s still all preliminary work and may not actually reflect the finished product! 😛
