#5251 – another reason why i want a kindle dx

This was posted over 16 years ago; my opinions, thoughts, attitude, and writing style may have evolved since then, and this post might have been different if it were to be posted today.

i’ve got a few ebooks in pdf form, and i’ve been thinking about getting a kindle dx sometime to supplement my first-generation kindle since i’d be able to copy pdf files to it and read those on the larger screen. well, today i found out at work that as of december 31, we’re replacing books24x7 with safari books online. books24x7 lets us read a bunch of management and technical books on the computer at the office, but the subscription we have doesn’t let us download pdf files. i like the contents of the safari books online library much better, so even just switching libraries pleases me greatly. it pleases tim o’reilly too:

i really hope that they’re going to be providing us with the “premium library” subscription, since that one lets you do whole-book downloads in pdf, epub and mobi digital formats (the “bookshelf” and “business library” ones let you download a chapter at a time, but that’s lame). i’d expect of the options available that they’d go with that subscription since it has tech books AND business/management books, while the other corporate subscriptions have one or the other, but not both, and our books24x7 subscription has both tech and management books… at least, I’D categorize the books available as both business and tech books.

if i am able to download pdfs, then i just know that i’d be getting my tech read on like gangbusters. especially if i had a kindle dx, since trying to read ebooks on the computer is kind of lame.
