there’s a chance that thursday i’ll find out about this position i applied and interviewed for at work with our systems team. though i want it, it’s a new position and it’s a bit intimidating because of how much increased responsibility and how little oversight i’d actually have compared to my current position… it’s basically a position to champion automation in our department for both internal and external customers, finding out system requirements, getting buy-in from other regions in the company, stuff like that.
i had my interview with the hiring manager about two weeks ago and i think that went well, and she said that she wanted to have the applicants also sit down with our associate director, not as an interview, but just to talk about the position and what they have in mind to do. i had my talk with the associate director on tuesday, and afterwards i felt almost like i talked my way out of the position, unfortunately (or fortunately). i was kicking myself that i didn’t expect him to ask me to recite our worry free guarantee; if you’re ever cornered by anybody high up in management you can almost always expect them to ask you what the five parts of the worry free guarantee are, and i got 3 out of 5 which i don’t think is too bad off the top of my head.
on one hand i’m really eager to finally get a chance to do something degree-related, but on the other hand i don’t know how much i’d be able to change… there’s a system or three (or more!) that we use that i personally think are absolute garbage and unnecessarily ridiculous, but they’re so entrenched in the company and business processes it’d be next to impossible to turn them into something better. i also have been considering leaving for a different corporate culture since i’m really just ready for a change, but good luck taking that leap in this economy.
plus, it’d suck if i leave and something like this turns out to be true since my employee discount would be awesome. i have no idea how accurate any of these rumors are, but it gets me just a little more excited for WWDC in a few weeks.
it should be an increase in pay, though it’d still be in my same pay-band (but what the range is for each pay band, nobody knows, so i’ve got no idea how much of an increase it would actually be). it might hinge on that, since what i might be offered may not be worth the increased responsibility.
if they do offer me the position, i’ll see if i can have a few days to think it over and consider it. if they don’t, oh well, i don’t think i’ll be too upset.
