#4924 – well, they both smell about the same

This was posted over 18 years ago; my opinions, thoughts, attitude, and writing style may have evolved since then, and this post might have been different if it were to be posted today.

i got a free redbox dvd rental code on my phone while i was at work today (you can sign up at their webpage, and every now and then on a monday they’ll send you a free rental code that you can share with friends if you want, it’s pretty sweet). since i just finished reading “flags of our fathers” for a school report i’m writing later this week, i figured that i’d see if i could rent the movie so i could see how it compared to the book. the website lets you see what’s available to rent at different redbox locations, but the webpage wouldn’t show me anything beyond the first page of dvd releases on my phone.

after work i stopped off at the redbox to see at the machine itself what it had in stock. it didn’t have “flags of our fathers” or even “letters from iwo jima”, but based on john1082‘s recommendation the other day i rented “hairspray” (i’m 2 or 3 minutes into it and yes, that’s exactly what baltimore is like, hah).

when i got to the apartment i poked around on the webpage and was looking to see what was in stock at this redbox outside of a mcdonald’s in laurel. the movies listed online were sorted by availability at the redbox, and it had “letters from iwo jima” and a few pages after that had “flags of our fathers”. i reserved them online and went off to the ram’s head tavern at savage mill to meet with some other folks from my statistics class so we could help each other out on our take-home exam (our instructor said we could help each other out – we can’t straight-up give each other the answers, but we can show how we solved different problems to help each other understand how it’s done). that really helped!

stopped at the mcdonald’s and picked up a big mac for dinner tonight on my way home from the exam studygroup and grabbed my movies from the redbox.

(i had tried earlier to rip “hairspray” to my computer so i could watch it later but my computer was having none of that, probably due to ripguard. “letters from iwo jima” is chugging along fine right now, though.)

so i had to choose between “hairspray” or “flags of our fathers” since “letters from iwo jima” is, uh, indisposed…

me: “do i want to see guys killing each other on iwo jima? or……. baltimore?”

zenmetsu: “that’s a tough choice.”

me: “iwo jima translates to ‘sulfur island’. that sounds like dundalk!”

so i’m watching “hairspray”, and i bust up laughing when i saw that john waters was “the flasher who lives next door”, haha!
