work today wasn’t too bad. had a meeting and some training. i might be applying for a business sales associate position; some folks i know and used to work with back in the day told me this position is opening up and that they think i’d be great for it.
i’m also considering starting to look for some other sort of job instead. i don’t know about that yet, but i’d like to do something new.
after work i went to the nationals game with dad and some folks from his office. i planned to drive all the way to rfk stadium since i figured i wouldn’t have time for the metro, but when my ride took me by the new carrollton station and i still had 30 minutes before the game i figured that i’d take the metro to the game instead. well, that would have been a good idea, but when i pulled into the station to park the car there were all these police cars and an ambulance all blocking up the entrance. eventually i was able to get my car parked, but then my speedpass didn’t work and the station manger had some issues with getting it to work right. still, i ended up arriving at the stadium in time to see the nats come up to bat at the bottom of the first inning. they ended up winning 6-0 over the florida marlins, and i was actually a little bit disappointed — since they were going into the game with a record of 9-24 i was expecting a crazy loss and wanted to see how they’d mess it up.
they gave out these sort of cooler/lunchbag things at the game. it’s the perfect thing to use for having a picnic. maybe i’ll do that this weekend sometime…
at one point in the game i was looking at a player’s info on the scoreboard and it said “BATS: RIGHT”. i think i need (well, i KNOW i need) a new glasses prescription because i thought for some reason it said “EATS: RIGHT” and wondered for a second why we should care how he eats or what hand he uses to hold his fork. i told dad and he said that “EATS: RIGHT” means he has a balanced diet, hahaha.
dad was telling me while we were on the metro riding back to our cars that he was snarled up on the bay bridge yesterday due to the big ol’ accident; he was just on the eastern-shore side of the bridge headed westward back home when he got stuck in traffic. the accident was on the other end of the bridge, so they couldn’t tell what exactly was going on up ahead but saw helicopters and such flying around. apparently he had gone up to new york on wednesday to help feisty_fitz pack up stuff before her cruise leaves on sunday/monday but didn’t leave until late that evening and so he spent the night at our aunt and uncle’s place in new jersey. once he got stuck in traffic on the bay bridge and people were just getting out of their cars and walking around. once they finally let folks turn around to get off he had to drive all the way back around the chesapeake bay to get home, which is crazy since where he was it would have been only another 15 minutes or so before he would have arrived at the house.
after he told me that story, i got stuck in traffic of my own on route 50. there was some accident in a construction zone (so the right 2 lanes were already closed down), and once they stopped traffic for the emergency responders it was only about 10 car lengths ahead of me. two fire trucks, county and state police, an ambulance, and a bunch of fire support cars showed up.
heh, after looking at the photo gallery in that news link above, i can tell that they should have done some tighter editing on the photos and not used so many of the same types of shots.
i picked up the photos i ordered from flickr that were delivered to the house a day or two ago. i’m going to replace the 20″x30″ print i have of the skyline of manhattan at my desk:
with this (plus, it gives you a pretty good idea of how big and awesome a 20″x30″ print really is):
that was from when nick markakis hit 3 home runs in one night last year. i figured he probably has the baseballs from those runs he hit (he should!), and since this one of home run #3 turned out awesome i’m going to send him 2 copies, one for him to keep as a memento and the other to see if he’ll autograph it and mail it back to me. i told you it was the best idea ever! i can’t wait to see peoples’ reactions to it when i put it up on my cubicle at work on monday, too!
i might try calling this guy about buying this used student oboe they’re selling for $150. i think for the type of playing and the amount of playing i’d be doing with it, i’d certainly get $150-worth out of it, especially since it’s not going to be for anything serious. they posted about it on craigslist on the 5th, so it’s been a week already. i hope nobody else tried to buy it yet. maybe i’ll see if they’ll part with it for $125…
and in other random musical news, i actually heard frank zappa’s “san ber’dino” on the radio today! i did a double-take when i passed the station and realized what it was. apparently it was from WTMD doing a fundraising drive and playing songs with artists’ names from ‘a’ to ‘z’.
