#4323 – unclaimed property auction

is it just me, or does former governor/comptroller schaeffer look a bit like uncle scrooge in that photo?

apparently the state of maryland auctions off unclaimed property on ebay:

Welcome to the State of Maryland’s unclaimed property auction.

My office is charged with the task of connecting people with money (or property) that has slipped through the cracks. This includes items, such as jewelry, coins and other collectibles, as recovered from abandoned safe deposit boxes.

Financial institutions, insurance companies and corporations are required to report contents of safe deposit boxes, bank accounts, wages, insurance benefits, security deposits, stock dividends and other property to our office if they remain unclaimed for three or more years.

We are mandated by state law to place for auction items we have received and kept in storage. These items are now available for sale and are posted for your review.

All money collected from auctioned items is kept for the original owner (or rightful heirs) and can be claimed at any time.

the ebay username is “mdcompschaefer”. apparently he’s not just a , but he’s also an A++++++++++++ ebayer… see:

and

what also cracks me up is the stuff for sale. of the 23 items for sale, there’s all these valuable things that people might normally have in safe-deposit boxes, such as:

  • pocket watches,
  • silver vases,
  • coins,
  • confederate banknotes,
  • silverware,
  • jewelry,
  • a high-school ring,
  • a 14k-gold mercedes emblem to use as a tie-tack,
  • and… comic books?!

and not just any comic books – trekkie comic books!

Item(s) as described by a certified appraiser:

    9 Comic Books, good condition:

    5 Star Trek the Next Generation #52, 55, 57, 58, 59

    2 Leonard Nimoy’s Primortals #6, 7

    2 Gene Roddenberry’s Lost Universe #1, 7

    what.
