what he’s got: only one of 3 musicians in the rock and roll, country music, and songwriters hall of fames. took the music to the people by performing in prisons. turned his life around from drugs and would do occasional inspirational talks. still, can be bitter at times: “Cash and “American Recordings” posted a “thank you” to the Nashville country music industry in Billboard Magazine after winning the Grammy for best country record for “Unchained” in the form of the infamous photo of Johnny angrily giving the middle finger to the camera taken back in 1969 during his San Quentin prison performance. Cash did this because he was enraged by Nashville having pretty much left behind him and other aging “country” artists who had defined the genre to make room for the more pop-oriented new country artists, like Garth Brooks.” once accidentally burned down half of a national forest when his truck caught on fire.

what he’s not: never served a prison sentence other than for a few misdemeanors. his name isn’t “johnny cash”, it’s “j.r. cash”, with no first or middle name.


what he’s got: took over a campus building in college during a demonstration, detaining martin luther king, sr. in the process. highest grossing movie actor of all time ($3.8 billion worldwide). an award was created (the cannes film festival’s “supporting actor” award) solely because of one of his performances.

what he’s not: worked as a camera stand-in for bill cosby in “the cosby show”. vegetarian.
